Spikes spherical, spikelets reddish brown at maturity. Similar to C. croceus which has spikes that are less dense with fewer spikelets.

Cultural Information

Freshly harvested seeds are often dormant. High germination percentages result from 10-33 weeks of after-ripening at 50 F (10 C). Germination was found to increase in seed stored at room temperature for up to 13 months. The seeds entered secondary dormancy after this period. Some seed still germinated after 8 years (Justice 1957).

Habitat

Dry woods and fields.
