Field Characters

Alternate leaves with no teeth. Ocre: sheath above point of attachment of leaf. Only Persicaria with hairy sheath and leaf wider than 2". Different from other smartweeds- 4 petals and flowers far apart on stalk. Other smartweeds have 5 petals and flowers touching each other on stalk.

Habitat

Well-drained ridges and knolls in bottomland hardwood forests, moist rich-soil upland hardwood forests.
