Natural History

A gallery forest species expected to be found at the prairie forest interface. In Louisiana it grows on the prairie soils of the southwest and in the northern part of the state. In Texas it grows on limestone slopes and ledges, in wooded arroyos, along streams and in palm groves from southern Edwards Plateau southwest and eastward (Correll and Johnston 1979). It ranges across the gulf coast from Florida to Texas. Its fruit are said to be edible either raw or cooked.
