Members of this genus are called "fourchette" by south Louisiana Acadians (Holmes 1990). The common name beggars-ticks comes from its seeds that readily attach themselves to clothes by two barbed awns. The barbed awns on the seeds of some Bidens species are said to work their way into the hides of fur bearing animals reducing the value of their pelts. This species is found in marshes, meadows, and ditches.
