Field Characters

1) Stems to ca. 12" tall and conspicuously flattened and twisted, graying-green in color; 2) plant bases reddish; 3) rhizomes slender, wire-like; 4) evident in spring, about late March through early June; 5) known occurrences are from depressions in saline prairies and hardwood and pine-hardwood flatwoods.

Habitat

Small depressions in saline prairies, hardwood flatwoods, and mixed pine-hardwood flatwoods; may occur in depressions in other prairie types, such as coastal prairie.
