Field Characters

E. hookerii has bracts that are wider, more spinose, and have wings at their base. E. intergrifolium is similar but has bracts that are linear, with no or only 3-5 spines, and no wings at their base.

Cultural Information

Little is know about the germination requirments of E.hookeri, however, it may benefit from cold/moist stratification as does E. yuccifolium (Steffen, J. F. 1997).

Natural History

Usually found in moist, limey soil in the coastal and blackland prairies of Louisiana and Texas, Mississippi, and Arkansas. Its presence in the salty coastal prairies of Texas indicate it is somewhat tolerant of salinity.

Habitat

Moist limey soil.
