Field Characters

Similar to Orbexilum pedunculatum but has deep purple flowers, a 7-10 mm long corolla, a 3.2-4 mm long calyx. Orbexilum pedunculatum has lilac to lavender flowers, a 4-7 mm long corolla, and a 2-3 mm long calyx The leaves of both these species are gland covered.

Cultural Information

Orbexilum can be transplanted with good success. Members of the genus Orbexilum benefit from scarification, cold/moist stratification, and innoculation at time of planting (Steffen 1997).

Natural History

The old genus name for this plant "psoralea" means "scabby" and refers to the glandular dots that cover the leaves. Psoralea simplex is found infrequently in the sandy soils of west Louisiana and east and southeast Texas.
