Cultural Information

Seeds germinate at an alternating temperature of 68-86 degrees F (20-30 C) (Steinbauer et al. 1955). Kolk (1962) found that strong daylight inhibited germination. Seed viability remains high for more than three years in dry storage. Seeds should be planted at a depth no greater than 0.5-1 cm (Kolk 1962).

Animal Use

Very palatable to chickens and other poultry.

Natural History

A Eurasian plant that has become naturalized in damp woods, thickets, lawns, and disturbed areas throughout Louisiana and east Texas. The leaves may be eaten boiled as a pot-herb (Medsger 1965).

Waste places, damp woods, thickets, old homesteads, meadows, woodlands.
