Field Characters

This grass has a very distinctive inflorescence and is easily identified when in flower (see photo). Triangular spikes on weak stalks that ‘quake’ in the wind.

Cultural Information

The seeds of its perennial cousin, Brizia media, germinate with no treatment (Dorph-Perterson 1924).

Animal Use

Poor livestock and wildlife values.

Natural History

A widely naturalized grass in disturbed areas throughout Louisiana and east and southeast Texas.

Habitat

Rare in moist woodland clearings and semi-disturbed soils of roadsides and ditch banks throughout the Gulf Coast.
