Field Characters
Up to 1 m tall perennial sedge that grows in sparse stands in intermediate to saline marsh. It has a leafy base with leaves that are thick and often semi-circular in cross section, are one third as long as culms, and point upward.
Natural History
Found in moist sands or muck soils of coastal marshes and dune swales (rarely alkaline situations inland).

Brackish marshes, savannas, moist sands or muck of coastal marshes, dune swales, or estuary banks and meadows.
