Cultural Information

Germination of the seeds of members of the genus Senecio is benefited by cold/moist stratification (Steffen 1997).

Natural History

Butterweed was incorrectly called "pissenlit" by the Acadians of south Louisiana, as this is the old French name for dandelion (Holmes 1990). It occurs in sandy prairie soils of Louisiana and east Texas. It ranges throughout the southeastern United States, from New Jersey south to the gulf coast states and west to Oklahoma and Texas.

Habitat

Open woods and fields along the coastal plain. Also in granite outcrops and pine woods, especially in sandy soils.
