Field Characters

Identification tip: Pennisetum ciliare is sometimes included in the genus Cenchrus and may be confused with species in this group, however, its can be distinguished by its inner bristles which are feather-like.

Cultural Information

Buffelgrass grows easily from seed. There are 260,000-625,000 seed/lb. Vegetative spread slow, colonization primarily by seed. Adapted to a wide range of soils. Grows best in a Ph range of 6 -8.5.

Animal Use

It is highly palatable to grazers and browzers (Hatch et al. 1999).

Natural History

This species has only been reported from one location in Natchitoches parish in Louisiana. It is very invasive in south Texas grasslands and is included here because it may eventually reach Louisianas remnants and restorations. It has been found throughout the southern most tier of states from California to Florida. It is reported to have a medium resistance to fire and salt and no tolerance of shade (USDA 1998).

Habitat

Frequently along roadsides and edges of fields.
