Field Characters

Reddish hairs on leaves. Leaflets 5-13, terminal leaflet largest and often lanceolate-obovate, lanceolate. Buds less than 3/4”.

Animal Use

Substrate-insectivorous birds use the tree for cover and as a nesting site. Fruit-birds eat the fruit. Starvation browse for deer; nuts eaten.

Dry or sandy woods or on rocky slopes, dry upland woods.
