Field Characters

A robust fall-flowering grass forming extensive stands on wet sites. Stems falling over and rooting at the nodes. Leaves more than 1” wide, leaf blades with heart-shaped bases. Inflorescence terminal, consisting of a system of many spike-like panicle branches.

Habitat

Wet depressions or swales in bottomland hardwoods forests; cypress-tupelo swamps. Also in sunny wetlands such as roadside ditches.
