A perennial forb with slender, square stems from rhizomes.
Seed germination is reported to improve with cold/moist stratification (Steffen 1997). Seeds average approximately 412,000/lb.
Attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds.
Usually found in wet, periodically flooded areas or even growing as an aquatic along ditches, in swamps, marshes and bottomlands of the prairie and Washington parishes of Louisiana, a few of the most northerly parishes and the eastern and southern half of Texas. It ranges from Kentucky to Alabama, and west to Texas.
