Cultural Information

To collect seeds, pick stems with unopened capsules and place in a paper bag until dry. The tiny seeds are black and average 7,568,000/lb. The recommended planting rate is 0.5 lbs/acre. Plant fresh seed in the fall or stratified seeds in the spring. Germination benefits from cold/moist stratification at 33-40 degrees for 30 days (Shirley 1994, Steffen 1997). The plants sometimes produce offsets which may be transplanted. A wet-mesic to dry-mesic species that grows in a wide variety of soil types, and a pH of 6-7.

Natural History

Eastern yellow stargrass grows in open woods, meadows, and prairies throughout most of Louisiana 9except for the Atchafalaya river basin) and east Texas.
